DIGBY, N.S. – If the run doesn’t bring you to Digby this weekend, the local food just might.
“There’s no better post-run snack than barbecued scallops,” claimed Cara Sunderland, active living coordinator for Digby Area Recreation.
The Digby Scallop Days 5K & 10K Fun Run will take place on Saturday, Aug. 12 for the 17th year, and Sunderland is expecting the regular turnout of about 150-175 runners.
“It’s going to be a great run,” she said. “This is my fifth year doing it, and we’ve never had bad weather yet, so my fingers are crossed for a great day.”

Started up by a local couple, the event has been in the hands of the local recreation department for the past five years. Originally a 5K only, it added the 10K distance three years ago, and this year has added a 2K run in an effort to encourage more young runners to take part.
What used to be a loop route around town is now an out-and-back along the beautiful Digby waterfront, overlooking the Annapolis Basin. Starting at the centre of downtown, the 10K route goes to the ferry terminal along the Shore Road, with the occasional slight incline but no real big hills.
Participants include visitors and locals.
“We get a lot of people from around the province, some from Ontario, British Columbia, the United States, which is great because it brings some new runners into town,” she said.
“A lot of people, if they are coming home during the summer, they tend to come home during the Scallop Days festival, because it’s a nice, family-style event.”
The event is included in Run Nova Scotia’s Road Race Series, which also brings plenty of additional runners to town. Timing through Atlantic Chip has also been provided for the past three years.
The run has always been part of the festival, which puts on a busy weekend of activities in Digby, including live entertainment, a parade, vendors, scallop shucking demonstrations, a woodsmen competition, car show and fireworks.
In case you haven’t heard, there will be plenty of Digby scallops too.
