QUISPAMSIS, N.B. – Gerald Arseneault chuckles when he thinks back to last year’s inaugural Les Pionniers cours pour les meres (Run for Mothers) 5K.
“Everything that could go wrong, went wrong,” said Arsenault, principal of the Ecole de Pionniers in Quispamsis, host of the run. “On the day of the race, there was no electricity at the school or in the community. There was rain…”

L’Ecole des Pionniers in Quispamsis, N.B. will host its second annual Les Pionniers Run for Mothers 5K on Saturday, May 13.

The race itself, however, went very well, and will return for its second year on Saturday, May 13.
It will be not only the second year for the run, but it is also the second year for the new francophone school. The run will serve as a fundraiser for the school to purchase equipment to keep its students active during recess and other breaks from the classroom.
The event will also support Saint John’s shelter for abused women.
“Also this year part of the proceeds will go to Hestia House, for women who need to leave their homes,” said Arsenault. “We thought it was pretty appropriate, especially on Mother’s Day weekend.”
Last year’s event saw participation from not just the school community, but also the greater community and people from other towns, according to Arsenault, who is hoping for another good turnout this year. Players from the Fundy Soccer Association have been invited to take part, with many having signed up.
The 5K run/walk will start and finish at the school in the Kennebecasis Valley, taking runners through a somewhat challenging, hilly course. A 1K race will also be offered for children.
