YARMOUTH, N.S. – This community is getting ready to run like MADD this weekend.
The Yarmouth chapter of MADD Canada will hold its annual Strides for Change event on Sunday, June 4 as part of a nationwide effort to raise money and awareness for Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
“Yarmouth has a wonderfully supportive running community and the local MADD group decided to tap into that market by organizing a run that is focused on community,” said race director Candice Phibbs. “We encourage kids, families and runners of all abilities for the event.”

The event offers three distances: a 1K kids’ “marathon” that is quick, flat out-and-back; as well as 5K and 10K loops, with the 10K being two loops of the 5K course, a relatively flat route with an incline at the finish line.
Community participation has made the event a success, according to Phibbs, making it one of the most popular running events in Yarmouth.
“For several years, the local learn-to-run club has used Strides for Change as its graduation event,” she said.
“We’ve also hosted the local school board’s Youth Event, bringing 75 students from across the county to promote physical activity and fun.”
This year’s goal for the organizers is 100 participants, which would amount to a fundraising total of $2,500.
Activities kick off at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
