MIRAMICHI, N.B. – Sacha Hourihan was looking for a 5K race last weekend, as she tuned up for the upcoming five-mile provincial championship in Hampton. She found a good one.
Hourihan ran the Miramichi September 5K on Sunday, Sept. 3, and finished first overall with a 17:35 time, a new personal best for her in the 5K.
“This was my first time running the 5K in Miramichi, and I heard that it was fast,” said the Southfield runner. “Sure enough, it was fast!”
Kilometres three and four were the fastest for Hourihan, who said, while this might have been her first time at the race, it will not be the last.

Sacha Hourihan of Southfield, N.B. finished in first place at the Miramichi September 5K on Sunday, Sept. 3, with a new PB time of 17:35.

“The Miramichi River Runners put on a great event and were very welcoming,” she said. “I really enjoyed it and will be back next year.”
Hourihan has already won the Run New Brunswick provincial championships in the 10K and 5K distances this year, and is hoping to add to that streak when she runs in the Hampton 5 Miler on Sept. 10.
Placing second on Sunday was top make finisher Paul Comeau of Miramichi, who crossed the line at the 18:48 mark. He was followed by second female Paula Keating, who finished at 18:53.
“It’s only my second 5K this year, so I haven’t been specifically training for the distance,” said Keating.
“Often I use these shorter races to push myself outside of my comfort zone and work on some speed/tempo. I was hoping to be slightly faster, but it wasn’t in the cards for me on Sunday.”
Comeau not only finished first place among males, the race also pushed him to first place in the Miramichi River Runners’ annual points series, while Williston advanced to second place.
Finishing second among males was Raymond Caissie at 19:02, followed by Ralph Williston at 19:52. The third place female was Amy Barrieau at 22:26.
