SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The run is new, but the event has been around for two decades.
Steps for Hope, a fundraising event for the Pregnancy Resource Centre of Saint John and formerly known as the Walk for Life, has added a 5K run option along with its 1K walk at this year’s event, which will take place on Saturday, June 17.
“This is the first year that Steps for Hope will include a run, and we hope that having both a walk and a run will attract more participants this year and going forward,” said Anna Steeves, executive director at the centre, a non-profit organization offering a place of support, hope and encouragement to people making life choices about pregnancy, relationships and faith.
Since the centre is funded entirely by private donations, Steps for Hope has always been a crucial fundraiser, she said.

The annual Steps for Hope event will take place in Saint John’s Rockwood Park on Saturday, June 17, in support of the Pregnancy Resource Centre of Saint John. For the first time this year, the event will include a 5K run. Shown here is a photo from last year’s walk.

In the early days, the event took place at the Canada Games Stadium track at UNBSJ, as an opportunity for people to collect pledges and participate in a walk-a-thon. It later moved to the Market Square boardwalk, and this year will take place at Rockwood Park.
“Both the walking and running course will showcase some of the beautiful trails at Rockwood Park,” said Stacy Fidler, public relations representative for the centre. “The shorter walking course will be on pavement or well-groomed gravel. The running course will take participants further into the woods and feature some more challenging trails.”
In the past, the event has drawn about 150 participants, and organizers are hoping for at least that many this year, with a fundraising goal of $18,500.
The walk/run will get underway at 11 a.m., followed by a barbecue and family activities, and presentation of prizes.
